Damdama College was established on the 9th of August, 1978 in the temple town of Assam- Hajo. Set in the bustling locality of Kulhati, the college has evolved to be an institution of repute. The college has six full fledged departments and enrolls not less than fifteen hundred students. The college sits on a campus of 44 bighas of land and is easily accessible by road. The nearest railway station is Kamakhya railway junction at a distance of about 31 km. The nearest airport is Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International airport at Borjhar which is about 38 km from the college.
In its initial years, the College attracted a very good pool of teachers and scholars. Professor.Dr. Gobinda Ch. Deka, an eminent scientist along with late Professor Tarinikanta Bhattacharya who retired as Principal, Cotton College inaugurated the classes. Other renowned scholars of the area like Mr. Bankim Sarma, retired Principal, Damdama Higher Secondary School and Mr.Promode Chandra Deva Sharma Shastri contributed to the growth of this institution as a center promoting a culture of democratic and liberal humanism.
A brief history of this college must also include contributions of the Damdama Higher Secondary School. This very famous school allowed its classrooms to be used by the students of the College. Classes were held from 7 am to 11 am. Only on the 2nd January 1982, classes began within the college itself. Students and faculties collected bamboo and other essentials to create makeshift rooms. Subsequently, Degree classes under the University of Gauhati started in 1984. The Government declared the college Grants in Aid institution in 1989. It was provincialized in 2005. The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) inspected the College on the 26-27th April, 2006 and placed it in the B grade.
The strength of this institution lies in academic achievement and its healthy environment. A rural college catering to the academic needs of local youths coming from agro-based working class families requires a very soft, careful managerial acumen in its build up process. A dedicated and learned faculty as well as the non teaching personnel ensures that students develop their latent potential in a homely yet intellectually stimulating environment. It is our humble effort to provide holistic education for the empowerment of the students as citizens of the global world.
